Old love hearts represent the constant state of flux that comes along with the “changes of heart” throughout one’s life. Each heart has gone through a process called “heat scarring” which melts the surface of the top of the metal, causing the metal to buckle, swirl, and change colors. Each heat scarring process produces different results, depending on the amount of heat involved and how long the flame remains close to the metal. I then place the scarred piece of metal into a heart-shaped die which is “puffed” into it’s 3-diminsional shape in a hydraulic press (a very cool machine!) Because the heat scarring process creates holes and thin areas in the meal, the heart essentially “explodes” and breaks apart when it is forced by the pressure into the mold. I then carefully stitch the heart back together, add beautiful gemstones and stamp messages onto the back of each heart. Each heart is unique and one-of-a-kind.
